Search engine optimization refers to optimizing the structure of a website such that it figures on the top of list for searches. Techniques include using keywords which are most commonly searched (to make it rank high for specific searches), or optimize the link layout so that the search engine sees more links referring to a certain page than those leaving it, using descrptive link titles, among others.

Previously, to rank high, a site would have had to pay the search engines. These days, when a paid search is listed, it comes as sponsored sites.
